Based on ESI and incites database, this study evaluates the discipline building-up level of colleges and universities in Henan Province. The results show that the paper output of 17 colleges and universities in the advantageous and characteristic discipline building-up project in Henan Province has shown an overall upward trend in the past 10 years. The the paper output of Zhengzhou University is much higher than that of the 16 other colleges and universities, and 14 disciplines have been selected into the top 1% disciplines in ESI. In Henan Province, 17 disciplines have been selected into the top 1% in ESI, while 5 disciplines including economics and commerce, microbiology, psychiatry/psychology, space science, and comprehensive disciplines have not been selected as the top 1% disciplines in ESI. The chemistry, engineering, agricultural science, material science and clinical medicine that have been selected as the top 1% disciplines in ESI have relatively strong scientific research strength, and can be regarded as the dominant disciplines in the construction of first-class disciplines in Henan Province. The microbiology, mathematics, plant and animal science of Zhengzhou University, the plant and animal science of Henan Normal University, the general social science, computer science, environment/ecology and microbiology of Henan Agricultural University are expected to be selected into the world’s top 1% disciplines in ESI soon. Compared with the “double first-class?universities in the other five central provinces, the quality and influence of the scientific research output of Zhengzhou University and Henan University in Henan Province’s “double first-class?universities urgently need to be improved. In order to promote the construction and development of first-class disciplines in Henan Province, Henan provincial government departments and universities should increase investment in scientific research in the future, scientifically formulate discipline plans and advantageous disciplines, so as to improve the first-class discipline construction project and enhance the international influence of scientific research in Henan Province.
